Glen Villa is my favourite place in the world. It is located on Lake
Massawippi, about 3 kms/1.5 miles outside the village of North
Hatley, Quebec. Abenaki Indians lived in the area for centuries,
hunting in the forests and fishing in the lake’s deep waters.
This area of Quebec is known as the Eastern Townships and was
settled initially by English speakers. North Hatley itself was part
of a large land grant given in 1793 by the British crown to Henry
Cull, an Englishman who lived in Quebec City, and Ebenezer Hovey, an
immigrant from the newly-established United States. Hovey was not a
loyalist but a man looking for richer pastures. For almost 100
years, North Hatley developed like other small Quebec villages,
supporting itself with farming and forestry.
