Out of the Ashes

Unfortunately, in June of 1909, this sparkling resort burned to the ground, just as the hotel was being readied for its seventh summer of operation. All that remained was the club house which later became a private home owned by Robert Davidson, a local boy who had made good in China in the 1920s and 30s.  He named it Siccaway Lodge after the street where he lived in Shanghai.

In the late 1940s Mr. Davidson sold the house and adjoining farm to Eric Webster, my father-in-law, who renamed the property Glen Villa after the hotel. His family, including my husband, spent their summers in this wonderful spot. In 1964, shortly before I came to North Hatley for the first time, Mr. Webster sold the property to his long-time neighbour, Doug Bradley, who tore down the old club house and built himself a new, modern home.

In 1996 my husband and I purchased the property with its architecturally distinctive house and live there now, welcoming family and friends as often as possible -- our privilege and our pleasure.
